Donald Trump and Kamala Harris locked in close race; the Republican showing gains in key battleground States
November 6, 2024 – As counting continues across the United States after voting had ended in the country yesterday, Democrat Donald Trump currently appears to be holding a narrow lead over Democratic rival Kamala Harris in several key battleground states. According to the latest projections, Trump is projected to have secured 227 Electoral College votes, while Harris has garnered 165, as of 11:30 pm ET (0430 GMT on Wednesday). To win, a candidate must reach 270 electoral votes.
At the time of publishing this report, in Pennsylvania 63% of the votes had been counted. Trump was ahead with 51.0% while Harris was at 48.1%. In Georgia, Trump’s lead was at 51.1% over Harris’s 48.2%, with 90% of votes in. Meanwhile, Wisconsin showed Trump at 50.0% against Harris’s 48.5%, with 56% of the vote counted. In Michigan 26% of the votes had been counted. Trump was at 50.4% and Harris at 47.8% thus indicating a tight contest.
Basically, all eyes are on the results from seven swing states. These are the battlegrounds and will be crucial to achieving the required threshold, with early counts showing Trump leading in several.
While counting is still underway, the final decision could be out only after all mail-in ballots have been accounted for. Plus each swing State has different counting rules.
Pennsylvania prohibits the early counting of mail-in ballot until all votes are cast on the day of the election. Analysts predict mail-in ballots are likely to favour Harris in this State. Therefore, Pennsylvania may not come up with a clear winner so soon. The same is true of North Carolina and Arizona where early votes and in-person votes could tilt the balance in anyone’s favour.
