US Naval Blockade Triggers Global Economic Fears; IMF Warns of Recession
The IMF has warned of serious economic fallout and that any further escalation in the conflict would push the world economy to the brink of recession
April 15, 2026 - The United States has imposed a complete naval blockade on Iran after the collapse of the peace talks in Islamabad on April 11-12, 2026. The blockade, which on Wednesday (April 15) entered its second day and targets all ships going to and from Iranian ports, have been enforced by warships, aircraft and around 10,000 troops. In a note sent to seafarers on Monday, the US military said: "Any vessel entering or departing the blockaded area without authorisation is subject to interception, diversion, and capture."
Earlier on Tuesday (April 14), the US military’s Central Command said no ship was allowed past the blockade and around six merchant ships were ordered to turn back, showing strict enforcement. A later Wall Street Journal report citing US officials said that more than 20 commercial ships have passed through the Strait of Hormuz in the past 24 hours.
It is feared that the blockade will have global economic repercussions with slower growth and rising inflation. Central Banks of UK, Japan and other countries are already adjusting policies owing to the uncertainty. The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has warned of serious economic fallout. It issued an ominous warning that any further escalation in the conflict would push the world economy to the brink of recession.
The conflict is at a critical turning point. However, despite escalation, new peace talks may resume soon (possibly in Pakistan) even though major disagreements remain. US President Donald Trump was quoted by Fox News as saying that the war is “close to over”. In an interview with the New York Post, Trump said, “You should stay there, really, because something could be happening over the next two days, and we’re more inclined to go there.”
Meanwhile, Trump’s war of words with the Vatican continues. “Will someone please tell Pope Leo (Pope Leo XIV) that Iran has killed at least 42,000 innocent, completely unarmed, protesters in the last two months, and that for Iran to have a Nuclear Bomb is absolutely unacceptable,” Trump said in a post on Truth Social.
In another update, envoys from Lebanon and Israel are meeting for their first diplomatic talks in more than 30 years. The last high-level talks between the two countries was in 1993. The meeting on Tuesday (April 14) and being held in Washington has been called with the US as mediator. Lebanon is pushing for a ceasefire while Israel seeks to disarm all "non-State militant outfits". According to US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, this was a "historic opportunity" to end Hezbollah's influence. Israel and Lebanon have agreed to hold direct negotiations after "productive discussions”, as per the US.
