Peace Talks Fail: US Threatens to Block Iran's Ports, Tensions Escalate
US-Iran negotiations end in deadlock; ceasefire holds but tensions rise after Washington announces maritime blockade of Iranian ports
April 13, 2026 - The high-level negotiations between delegates of the United States and Iran which began in Islamabad on April 11 has ended in a deadlock with both sides failing to arrive at any agreement. The talks, lasting around 21 hours, remained inconclusive because of key disagreements on Iran’s nuclear programme (uranium enrichment) and US demands to dismantle facilities and limit regional influence.
Iran has said it does not plan further talks for now, accusing the US of shifting demands. The country’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, who was part of the delegation, has blamed the failure of the talks on US’s “maximalism, shifting goalposts and blockade”.
On the other hand, US President Donald Trump has said he did not care if Iran returned to the negotiationg table and claimed that the talks failed because the latter would not "give up its nuclear ambitions".
Although diplomacy has stalled, with both sides far apart, the two-week ceasefire since April 8 remains in place with the US officials say it is “holding well” for now. However, the truce is merely technically holding and is fragile with tensions high in the region.
Following the talks falling through, the US announced a major maritime blockade of Iranian ports starting April 13. The US military has threatened to block all maritime traffic entering and exiting Iranian ports, starting at 10am ET (14:00 GMT) today. Transit through the Strait of Hormuz may still be allowed.
This is widely seen as a major escalation, potentially an “act of war” and Iran has warned that any enforcement could violate the ceasefire and has threatened retaliation against foreign military presence. Iran’s IRGC has warned that any military vessel that approaches the Hormuz will be considered in violation of the ceasefire and “will be dealt with severely”.
Iran's Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf has trolled Trump for this threat writing on X, “Enjoy the current pump figures… With the so-called 'blockade', soon you'll be nostalgic for $4-$5 gas."
The potential resumption of the conflict has caused widespread concern with Australia urging immediate resumption of talks and reopening of the Strait of Hormuz for global trade.
“We want to see the strait of Hormuz opened and with freedom of navigation taking place, so obviously, the lack of a resolution in the negotiations that took place on the weekend were disappointing,” Australia Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said.
