Aug 6, 2025 – At least four people have been reported dead and 11 Army jawans missing following the devastating Uttarkashi flash floods yesterday, August 5. The region is still under red alert after a massive cloudburst in the catchment area of the Kheer Ganga river triggered flash floods and landslide washing away people and houses in Dharali and Sukki villages and causing widespread destruction.

Around 60 to 70 people are feared washed away or trapped, according to the administration. The Army jawans were stationed in a camp in Harsil that, too, was hit by the cloudburst.

Hotels and residential houses were hit by massive waves of water which came raging down the hills, sweeping everything in its wake. The market area of the picturesque tourist town of Dharali was turned into a muddy sludge within seconds.

Rescue operations are underway with 150 Army personnel being deployed to look for people feared missing or trapped under debris.

Torrential rains continue to wreak havoc in Uttarakhand leading to disruption of normal lives and traffic. The National Highway 35 near Nigulsari in Kinnaur has been shut while landslides at Chakki Mor in Shimla has led to the closure of the Chandigarh-Shimla National Highway.
