Scientists from the Science Popularisation Association of Communicators and Educators (SPACE) will observe the transition of Venus, the second planet from the Sun, across the sun’s disk on 6th June, 2012 from the Udaipur Solar Observatory.
‘Venus Transit’ is a rare eclipse event where Venus passes directly between the Earth and the Sun and appears as a black spot gliding across the fiery face of the sun. This natural phenomenon, after 6th June, will take place after 105.5 years.
“The Transit will be visible in Udaipur from sunrise till 10:22 am,” said an expert on the Venus Transit.
The SPACE team will be reaching Udaipur on 4th June and will be in the city till the evening of the 6th of June in the evening. This team will witness the phenomenon from the Udaipur Solar Observatory, the only observatory of its kind in India.
“SPACE and Solar Observatory Udaipur will also allow the general public to observe the transit from 5:45 am to 10:22 am”, said Dr Ashok Ambastha, Secretary, ASI Udaipur Solar Observatory. “The expedition team from SPACE will comprise of 10 members who will conduct a number of experiments and scientific observations during the transit.”
All schools and general public will be invited to join SPACE at the solar observatory from 5:45 am to 10:22 am to witness what will most probably be the last Venus Transit of our lifetime.
