Udaipur, Sept 09, 2025: BJP (NDA) candidate CP Radhakrishnan, incumbent Governor of Maharashtra, was elected to the post of Vice President of India on Tuesday, September 9. He will take office as the 15th Vice President of India. His predecessor, Jagdeep Dhankar, resigned from office on July 21, 2025 citing health reasons. Radhakrishnan was challenged by B. Sudershan Reddy.

Voting and Results

Of the Electoral College count of 781, a total 767 votes were cast. 752 were valid votes. Radhakrishnan won, securing a total of 452 votes in support of his candidature.  Members of both the Houses of Parliament, viz. Lok Sabha (543 members) and Rajya Sabha (245 elected members including 12 nominated members), form the Electoral College (788 members), which cast their votes for electing the Vice President of India. Both the elected as well as nominated members cast their votes. The effective strength of the electoral college was 781 as 7 seats are vacant (1 in Lok Sabha and 6 in Rajya Sabha). 13 members, belonging to BJD, BRS and SAD and independent candidates, abstained from voting. As per government sources, Independent member Sarabjeet Singh Khalsa, SAD members Harsimrat Kaur; BRS members Suresh Reddy, Ravi Vaddiraju, Parthasaradhi Reddy, Damodar Divakonda; and BJD members Sasmit Patra, Muzibulla Khan, Niranjan Bishi, Manas Ranjan Mangaraj, Sulata Deo, Debashish Samantaray and Subhashish Khuntia abstained from vote.

Who is CP Radhakrishnan

Radhakrishnan, the 15th Vice President of India, is currenty the Governor of Maharashtra since July 2024, a post that he will resign from before taking oath as Vice President of India. Born on October 20, 1957, Radhakrishnan has also been the Governor of Jharkhand from Feb 2023 till July 2024. He also took on the additional responsibility of Governor of Telangana and Lt Gov of Puducherry.He has been a member of the BJP and the RSS since his younger days, and was elected to the Lok Sabha in 1998 (winning margin 150,000) for the first time, followed by a re-election in 1999 (winning margin 55,000).  A former state President of the BJP, Radhakrishnan is also known as Modi of Tamil Nadu. He joined the BJP in 1980 as aide to Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

He is credited with the 93 day Rath Yatra in Tamil Nadu, advocating for eradication of untouchability, linking Indian rivers and anti-terrorism. A sportsman hy hobby, Radhakrishnan is also a long distance runner.
