Rajasthan has introduced new rules requiring all new residential and commercial projects to include wastewater recycling systems. This decision comes after the state government directed projects to set up rainwater harvesting systems to qualify for drinking water connections.
Starting immediately, the Public Health Engineering Department (PHED) will not approve drinking water connections for buildings that do not comply with these new rules. The regulations apply to all new buildings with a footprint of 225 square meters or more.
For larger buildings, specifically those over 10,000 square meters, a sewage treatment plant will be required. Additionally, only toilets with dual flush cisterns will be permitted in these buildings.
According to a policy update from April 24, 2024, wastewater recycling and sewage treatment systems must be installed as per the Rajasthan Building Regulations 2020 to secure drinking water connections for multi-storey buildings.
Building owners must also construct rainwater recharge structures. The municipal corporation will not issue No Objection Certificates (NOCs) until these structures are in place. Failure to comply could result in legal action, including fines or imprisonment.
PHED officials will inspect buildings to ensure they meet the new requirements before processing applications for water connections.
