WB Election 2026: Matua Vote Shifts Again as BJP Strengthens Lead in Bangaon

WB Election 2026: BJP strengthens lead in Bangaon as Matua vote shifts again. Key constituencies see big margins in early counting trends.

May 04, 2026: The early rounds of counting have once again highlighted the continued dominance of the Bharatiya Janata Party in the Matua-dominated belt of Bangaon. The saffron camp has established a strong lead across multiple constituencies, including Bangaon North, Bangaon South, Gaighata, and Bagda. This trend suggests a continuation of the political shift observed since the 2019 Lok Sabha elections and further consolidated during the 2021 West Bengal Assembly polls, where BJP had secured a significant presence in the region.

Political observers note that the Matua vote bank has remained a crucial factor in shaping electoral outcomes in these constituencies. Since the beginning of counting, BJP candidates have consistently maintained an edge in most seats, reflecting sustained support from a large section of voters in the area. While the All India Trinamool Congress had made strong campaign efforts to regain ground in this region, the early trends indicate that the saffron camp has largely retained its influence.

High-Stakes Contest in Bagda Draws Attention Amid Tight Rivalry

One of the most closely watched battles has been in the Bagda constituency, where the competition between candidates has remained intense since the initial phase of counting. However, as the rounds progressed, BJP candidate Baudi has managed to pull ahead significantly, building a substantial lead over rival Nana. The gap widened steadily with each round, indicating a clear shift in voter preference as counting advanced.

In Bangaon, the contest has been particularly notable due to the high-profile nature of the candidates. Trinamool Congress nominee Madhuparna Thakur initially led in the early stages of counting, generating hopes of a strong performance. However, as subsequent rounds unfolded, the margin began to narrow rapidly. By the tenth round, BJP candidate Soma Thakur had surged ahead decisively, establishing a lead of more than 21,000 votes. The contest has drawn additional attention due to the family-linked political dynamics between the candidates, making it one of the most closely followed races in the region.

In Gaighata constituency as well, the BJP candidate is maintaining a comfortable advantage, leading by more than 18,000 votes after the seventh round of counting. Similar trends are being observed in both Bangaon North and South, where saffron camp candidates continue to stay well ahead of their opponents, strengthening the overall position of the party in the region.

According to political analysts, the consistent support for the BJP in these constituencies reflects a deeper consolidation of the Matua community’s political preference over recent election cycles. The community’s influence remains a decisive factor in shaping outcomes in this belt, and the current trends appear to reinforce that alignment once again.

As counting continues, BJP supporters across several constituencies have begun celebrating with traditional festivities, including the use of colours and distribution of sweets, reflecting growing confidence in the results. However, officials have noted that final outcomes will only be confirmed after all rounds of counting are completed, and margins may still shift in select constituencies as remaining votes are tallied.
