West Asia War Day 28: Trump Extends Pause on Iran Energy Infra Strikes
West Asia conflict enters week four with heavy strikes, US troop buildup, Iran mobilisation and a 10-day pause on energy attacks as peace talks show cautious progress
March 27, 2026 – The West Asia war has entered its fourth week with continued heavy strikes but no clear military victory amid fragile, uncertain peace talks. The US is deploying more troops (thousands, with possible 10,000 more) to the region while Iran is reportedly mobilising large numbers of fighters and warning of wider war. Strikes have hit multiple Iranian cities, including key infrastructure and missile sites.
Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump has said there will be a 10-day pause (until April 6) on strikes against Iranian energy facilities while talks are ongoing with Iran which he described as “going very well”. In a post on his social media platform Truth Social, Trump wrote, “As per Iranian Government request, please let this statement serve to represent that I am pausing the period of Energy Plant destruction by 10 Days to Monday, April 6, 2026, at 8 PM, Eastern Time.”
Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar has confirmed carrying out mediation efforts between the US and Iran with Turkey and Egypt lending support.
Johann Wadephul, Foreign Minister of Germany has said that the US and Iran have already held indirect contacts which was a positive sign. US special envoy Steve Witkoff has hinted at a possible breakthrough and said there were “strong signs” that Iran could be persuaded to talk for a deal.
At the behest of Russia, the UN Security Council is scheduled to hold a closed-door meeting on Friday (March 27) to discuss the ongoing war, as per Russia’s State media.
The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) has pushed for inclusion of the Gulf states in any US-Iran talks or deal. GCC Secretary General Jasem Mohamed Al-Budaiwi has called the war a direct threat to Gulf security, shipping and global economy.
With the war entering its 28th day, missiles and drones launched by Iran targeted and were intercepted over the Gulf nations, including Saudi Arabia and Kuwait with deaths and injuries being reported in different countries. There were two fatalities in Abu Dhabi after debris fell following an air defence interception.
US-Israel and Iran continue to trade fire and Israel has increased strikes in Isfahan and ground operations in Lebanon while Hezbollah has threatened continued assault.
Israeli army has said it has killed IRGC Navy commander Alireza Tangsiri in an airstrike whereas six persons were injured in Israel in an Iranian missile attack.
