West Bengal & Tamil Nadu: High-Stakes Assembly Elections Underway

Voting is underway in West Bengal and Tamil Nadu Assembly Elections 2026; more than 9 crore voters are participating as high-stakes contests unfold; results on May 4

April 23, 2026 - Today, April 23, two major Indian States - West Bengal and Tamil Nadu - are voting in high-stakes election for a new Constituent Assembly. West Bengal is voting in two phases while Tamil Nadu votes in a single phase. 

The first phase of voting is currently underway in West Bengal across 152 constituencies out of 294. Around 3.6 crore voters are participating in this phase. The second phase will be held on April 29. 

In tbe State, the election is primarily a high-stakes contest between TMC (led by Mamata Banerjee) and the BJP. Over 2.5 lakh paramilitary personnel have been deployed to ensure high security. The Election Commission of India (ECI) has identified more than 8,000 “super-sensitive” booths. Some clashes and isolated violence incidents were reported before voting began.

In Tamil Nadu, polling is underway across all 234 constituencies in the State. Voting started at 7:00 am and will continue till evening. Around 5.7 crore voters are eligible to vote. 

The Tamil Nadu election is a high-stakes multi-cornered fight involving the DMK-led ruling alliance, the AIADMK-led alliance with BJP and new and smaller parties including TVK, led by actor Vijay. The contest is being closely watched as a test of Chief Minister MK Stalin’s government versus the resurgence of the Opposition.

Counting of votes will take place on May 4 in West Bengal, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Assam and Puducherry. Results are to be declared the same day.
