April 27, 2026 - The major security scare on the night of April 25, 2026 at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner in Washington, DC, has brought in strong condemnations from world leaders across the globe who said that political violence has no place in a democracy. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, too, has condemned the act and expressed relief that all present at the dinner, including US President Donald Trump, First Lady Melania and Vice-President JD Vance, were unharmed. He has extended his best wishes for the leaders’ continued well-beiing.

The April 25 incident occurred at around 8:30–8:40 pm when the President, Vice-President, senior officials, journalists and celebrities were present at the high-profile, black-tie gala being held in the ballroom of the Washington Hilton . A lone gunman breached the security of the venue and opened fire but was quickly overpowered. One Secret Service agent was hit, but survived owing to body armour.

As soon as multiple gunshots were heard near a security checkpoint just outside the ballroom which had around 2,500 guests, Secret Service agents quickly drew weapons and secured the room. Panic broke out immediately. Trump, Melania and Vance were quickly evacuated while the other guests ducked under tables and remained there till the all-clear sign was given.

The suspect has been identified as Cole Tomas Allen, a 31-year-old from Torrance California. He was armed with a shotgun, handgun and multiple knives. Authorities say he acted alone and was targeting the US President and senior administration officials. A manifesto and writings, which he sent to his family just before the attack, suggest he planned to target officials “from highest-ranking to lowest.”

The dinner was cancelled mid-event and guests were evacuated. Trump later said the event may be rescheduled within weeks. This was an important dinner because Trump was finally returning to the White House Correspondents' Association Dinner after a decade-long absence.

The suspect is reportedly to be highly educated. He is an awarded part-time teacher/tutor who provided academic coaching. Though the motive behind the suspected attacker’s action are not clear but "anti-government and extremist writings" were reported. Believed to have strong anti-government and anti–Trump administration views, he reportedly described himself as “Friendly Federal Assassin”. His writings, as per reports, indicate "anger over US government policies".
