-4 women officers have been deployed.

-2 of the women are posted on the aircraft carrier INS Vikramaditya, while 2 are on the Indian Naval Tanker ship INS Shakti.

The Indian Navy has deployed women officers on warships on International Women’s Day. It may be noted that the last time Indian Navy deployed women officers on warships was in 1998.

2 of the women officers have been deployed on the INS Vikramaditya which is an aircraft carrier and 2 on INS Shakti-Indian Naval Tanker. It is after 23 years that women have been deployed on the warships. The decision was reviewed after issues came up during the brief posting.

Officers on the naval tanker INS Shakti include a doctor. She said that Indian Navy has given her the opportunity to serve both as a doctor and onboard warship. She added that they work shoulder to shoulder with their male counterparts.

Indian Navy said that it had started building separate cabins and washrooms a few years ago for female officers to prepare the vessels for the female officers. The women are also being given foreign postings as defence attaches. The first lady to be posted as defence attache is Lieutenant Commander Karabi Gogoi.
