Udaipur, March 25, 2025 - PM Narendra Modi virtually inaugurated the Vikramaditya Vedic Clock on February 29, 2025 in Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh. This clock is based on the Indian panchang (almanack) and revives the ancient tradition of Indian time calculation.
Experts say that Ujjain was the world’s standard time center 300 years ago. The city has long been important for timekeeping, and the Tropic of Cancer also passes through Ujjain.
The clock is installed on an 85-foot-high tower at Jantar Mantar in Ujjain, next to the Government Jiwaji Observatory.
It is based on the Indian ‘panchang’ and provides information on planetary positions, Muhurat, astrological calculations, and predictions.
It also displays Indian Standard Time (IST) and Greenwich Mean Time (GMT).
The Vedic clock follows Indian astronomical theory and the movement of planets and stars.
It shows details like moon position, Parva, Shubh-Muhurat, Nakshatra, solar and lunar eclipses.
Unlike regular clocks, this one divides time from one sunrise to the next into 30 parts, with each hour being 48 minutes long.
This clock is an effort to restore India’s ancient timekeeping tradition and highlights Ujjain’s historical importance in time calculation.
