Yoon Suk Yeol Gets Life for 2024 Martial Law Plot in South Korea
Former South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol receives life imprisonment after a court convicts him of planning an insurrection linked to his 2024 martial law decree
Feb 19, 2026 - South Korean ex-President Yoon Suk Yeol was sentenced to life imprisonment on Thursday (February 19) by a Court that found him guilty of planning an insurrection during his imposition of martial law in 2024. The Seoul Central District Court held Yoon responsible for throwing the country into a political chaos that almost derailed decades of democracy.
The martial law was reversed within six hours after the country’s lawmakers forcibly entered the Parliament and blocked the President's decree. Yoon was later impeached and removed from office.
The Court also convicted and sentenced the military and police officials who were involved in the martial law enforcement.
The former President is likely to appeal the verdict. Prosecutors had sought the death penalty.
