JLR Defender 110 Price Cut by ₹34 Lakh in India After Local Assembly
Jaguar Land Rover has started local assembly of select Defender 110 X-Dynamic HSE variants at its Pune facility, reducing prices by up to ₹34 lakh. The 3.0-litre petrol and diesel versions now start at ₹1.18 crore, while the 2.0-litre petrol variant is priced at ₹99 lakh, ex-showroom. Here's a look at the revised prices, features and what the move means for luxury SUV buyers.
October 28, 2026: Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) has introduced a major change in India's luxury SUV market by starting local assembly of select versions of the Defender 110. Previously, these vehicles were imported as fully built units from Slovakia. Now, JLR is bringing component kits to India and assembling them at its Pune facility. As a result, the prices of certain variants have been reduced by up to ₹34 lakh, making the luxury SUV more attractive to potential buyers.
Models such as the Range Rover and Range Rover Sport are already assembled at JLR's Pune facility. The Defender 110 X-Dynamic HSE has now joined the list. According to the company, this is the first time the Defender has been assembled locally in India. The move is aimed at meeting domestic demand and making the SUV more competitively priced in the Indian market.

Local assembly has led to price reductions for three versions of the Defender 110. All prices listed below are ex-showroom.

The price reduction is mainly due to the change in the import process. Previously, the vehicles arrived as completely built-up (CBU) units. Under the new system, the components are imported as completely knocked-down (CKD) kits and assembled in India. The different customs duty structure for CKD imports has helped JLR reduce prices.
The previous prices also included the cost of certain optional features, some of which are now part of the standard equipment. According to the report, the 2.0-litre petrol variant included 17 options worth ₹6.5 lakh, while the 3.0-litre variants included 29 options worth ₹17 lakh.
Which Defender Models Are Being Assembled in India?
At present, local assembly is limited to the Defender 110 X-Dynamic HSE. The Defender 90, Defender 130 and high-performance Defender Octa continue to be imported as fully built vehicles. According to the report, these models have not been included in the local assembly programme for now because of their relatively lower sales volumes.
Local assembly could help improve vehicle availability and reduce waiting periods. However, actual delivery times will depend on demand, production capacity and stock availability at dealerships.
What Features Does the Defender Offer?
One of the main reasons for the Defender's popularity is its combination of rugged off-road capability, a premium cabin and modern technology. The SUV features a 13.1-inch Pivi Pro touchscreen infotainment system, a 12.3-inch digital driver display and a head-up display.
Other features include a 700-watt Meridian surround sound system with 15 speakers, adaptive air suspension, a panoramic sunroof, three-zone climate control, a wireless phone charger, ambient lighting and a digital interior rear-view mirror (IRVM). The front seats offer 14-way power adjustment, heating, cooling and memory functions.
In terms of safety, the Defender comes with multiple airbags, Level 2 Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), electronic stability control, a 360-degree camera, front and rear parking sensors, and Hill Descent Control. The report also states that the Defender has received a five-star safety rating in Euro NCAP crash tests.
Multiple Engine Options
The Defender range offers several petrol and diesel engine options, including mild-hybrid engines and high-performance V8 units. The available engine specifications vary by model and market.

The engines are paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and an all-wheel-drive (AWD) system. For off-road driving, the Defender offers features such as a Terrain Response system, Hill Launch Assist, a twin-speed transfer case, Adaptive Off-Road Cruise Control and an electronic locking differential.
Which SUVs Compete With the Defender?
The Defender competes with premium SUVs such as the Mercedes-Benz GLE and GLS, BMW X5 and X7, and Audi Q7. The high-performance Defender Octa also competes in a more specialised segment against models such as the Mercedes-Benz G-Class and Porsche Cayenne GTS.
The local assembly of the Defender 110 could strengthen its position in India's luxury SUV market. The ₹34 lakh price reduction on the 3.0-litre petrol and diesel X-Dynamic HSE variants is particularly significant and could influence buyers considering premium SUVs. However, the final on-road price will vary by state because of differences in taxes, registration charges, insurance and dealer-related costs.
