Mahindra Thar OG launched at ₹10.32 lakh: Check 7 major updates
Mahindra has launched the new Thar OG at an initial price of ₹10.32 lakh. Check its seven major updates, including new engines, suspension, safety and off-road features.
September 24, 2026: Mahindra has launched the updated version of its popular three-door off-road SUV, the Thar OG. The initial ex-showroom price of the new model has been set at ₹10.32 lakh. The new Thar OG has been launched in the market, replacing the current Thar that was introduced in 2020.
Although the familiar boxy design has been largely retained on the outside, several important changes have been made to the chassis, suspension, steering, off-road system, engine and safety features. Mahindra has said that deliveries of the new model will begin on October 11, 2026. So, what has changed in the new Thar OG? Let's take a look at seven important updates.
1. New LED Lights and 19-Inch Alloy Wheels
The original boxy design and familiar silhouette of the Thar OG have been retained. However, a new grille has been added at the front. Instead of the previous six-slat design, the new model gets a five-slat grille with 'Thar' branding on the passenger side.
The headlamps now feature an LED setup with C-shaped DRLs. The new LED fog lamps also get a cornering lamp function. The front and rear bumpers have also been redesigned. The most noticeable change from the side is the new 19-inch dual-tone alloy wheels. At the rear, the SUV gets new LED tail lamps, redesigned bumpers and an 'OG' badge.
2. Major Changes to the Chassis and Suspension
One of the most important changes in the Thar OG is hidden in the internal structure of the SUV. The new model is built on the M_Glyde 4G platform. Mahindra claims that the new platform is stiffer than before and is designed to improve stability both on-road and off-road.
A Pentalink suspension with Watts Link has been added at the rear. It is accompanied by DaVinci Frequency Dependent Damping (FDD) technology. This setup aims to provide better comfort at low speeds while improving stability at higher speeds.
3. ELD and Three Terrain Modes for Off-Roading
The Thar OG has received a major upgrade in terms of off-road capability. The new model gets an Electronic Locking Differential (ELD). This system can help the SUV move forward if the wheels start spinning excessively on slippery, muddy or low-traction surfaces.
It also gets a Brake Locking Differential (BLD). The new model comes with three Terrain Modes: Mud, Sand and Snow. These modes help control the vehicle's power through the traction control system on different low-traction surfaces.
4. Electric Power Steering for the First Time
The new Thar OG gets Electric Power Steering (EPS) instead of the hydraulic power steering used in the previous Thar. This should make the steering relatively lighter when driving on narrow city roads, parking or travelling at low speeds.
The system can also help reduce sudden shocks or steering kickback while off-roading, making the SUV easier to control in different driving conditions.
5. New Brown-and-Black Theme in the Cabin
Instead of the previous all-black cabin, the Thar OG gets a new Truffle Brown and Black theme. The seats feature perforated leatherette upholstery. A soft armrest with cupholders has also been added for the rear passengers, which should improve comfort in the back row during long journeys.
Features include a 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system, wireless Android Auto, wired Apple CarPlay, a six-speaker sound system, cruise control, passive keyless entry and a height-adjustable driver's seat. New additions include a wireless charger and push-button engine start.
6. Six Airbags and Four-Wheel Disc Brakes for Safety
Mahindra has also upgraded the safety features of the new Thar OG. The higher variant gets six airbags, four-wheel disc brakes and front parking sensors. It also comes with ESP, roll-over mitigation, hill-hold control, rear parking sensors, a rear camera and ISOFIX child-seat mounts.
Mahindra has said that the top variant also gets four additional HPTS, or Head, Pelvis, Thorax and Shoulder airbags. However, it is important to note that six airbags are not standard across all variants. The base AXT variant has a relatively simpler feature list.
7. More Powerful Engines and New 2WD Options
The Thar OG is offered with three engine options. The 1.5-litre CRDe diesel engine produces 119 PS and 300 Nm of torque. The 2.0-litre mStallion turbo-petrol engine produces 162 PS and 330 Nm, while the 2.2-litre mHawk diesel engine produces 152 PS and 330 Nm. According to Mahindra's official specifications, the 1.5-litre diesel engine produces 300 Nm of torque.
The 2.0-litre petrol and 2.2-litre diesel engines are available with six-speed manual and six-speed automatic gearbox options. One of the key changes is that the 2.2-litre diesel engine is now available with a 2WD, or rear-wheel-drive, configuration for the first time. A 4WD option is also available.
How Much Does the Thar OG Cost?
The Thar OG's initial ex-showroom price starts at ₹10.32 lakh. The top-of-the-line ZXT 2.2-litre diesel 4WD automatic variant is priced at ₹18.99 lakh. The new SUV is available in three main variants, including LXT and ZXT.
According to Mahindra, these prices are introductory and apply to vehicles delivered until November 30, 2026.
The mechanical upgrades inside the Thar OG are more significant than the exterior design changes. With a new platform, Pentalink suspension, DaVinci dampers, EPS, ELD, new Terrain Modes, updated engines and additional safety features, the SUV's technical package has changed considerably while retaining the familiar character of the Thar.
