September 17, 2026: Various programmes are being organised across the country to mark the 76th birthday of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. At the same time, attention has also turned to one of the most important parts of the Prime Minister’s security system — his convoy of specially protected vehicles. These cars are used for the Prime Minister’s travel and offer a much higher level of ballistic and explosion protection than regular luxury vehicles.

The convoy is managed by the Special Protection Group (SPG), which is responsible for the Prime Minister’s security. It includes several types of specially protected vehicles, such as the Mercedes-Maybach S650 Guard, Range Rover Sentinel, Armoured Toyota Land Cruiser, BMW 760Li High Security and Armoured Toyota Fortuner.

Throughout this article, we will share complete details about the cars used in the Prime Minister’s security convoy, including their features, protection levels and other important information. We will also look at why these specially protected vehicles are used for the Prime Minister’s travel.

1. Mercedes-Maybach S650 Guard

The Mercedes-Maybach S650 Guard is one of the most secure vehicles in the Prime Minister's security fleet. Its estimated value is over Tk 12 crore, according to various reports. The vehicle has VR10-level ballistic protection, which can protect against high-powered firearms. It also has explosion-proof armour, run-flat tyres, and a sealed cabin. The cabin has a separate oxygen or air supply system, so passengers are protected even if dangerous situations arise in the outside environment.

The car is powered by a 6.0-litre twin-turbo V12 engine. The engine produces more than 500 horsepower. The top speed is electronically limited to 160 kilometres per hour.

2. Range Rover Sentinel

Another important vehicle in the Prime Minister's convoy is the Range Rover Sentinel. It has VR8-level ballistic protection. The SUV is protected against 7.62 mm armour-piercing rounds and is designed to withstand a blast equivalent to about 15 kg of TNT, according to the vehicle's safety features.

There is also additional protection against grenade attacks from above and below. The vehicle has an onboard fire suppression system, independent oxygen supply and a public address system. The vehicle gets 380 horsepower from a 5.0-litre supercharged V8 engine. Despite weighing more than 4.4 tons, it takes 10.4 seconds to reach 0 to 100 kmph. The top speed is 193 kmph.

3. Armoured Toyota Land Cruiser

The Armoured Toyota Land Cruiser also plays an important role in the Prime Minister's security fleet. The 4.5-litre V8 diesel engine produces about 260 bhp of power and 650 Newton-meters of torque. In addition to four-wheel-drive capability, the car has ballistic armour and blast-resistant construction. The cabin is fortified to protect passengers even in situations like chemical attacks. The car was seen in use during the Prime Minister's Independence Day celebrations at the Red Fort.

4. BMW 760LI High Security

One of the most secure sedans in the Prime Minister's convoy is the BMW 760LI High Security. It has armoured body panels, bullet-resistant glass, and run-flat tyres. It also has a self-sealing fuel tank and emergency oxygen supply system, which can provide additional protection in situations like gas attacks. The car produces 544 horsepower and 750 Newton-meters of torque from its 6.0-litre V12 engine. It takes just 6.2 seconds to reach 0 to 100 kilometres per hour. The top speed is limited to 210 kilometres per hour.

5. Armoured Toyota Fortuner

Armoured Toyota Fortuners are also often seen in the Prime Minister's convoy as escort and tactical support vehicles. Such vehicles are used as part of the SPG security system. The Fortuner, which offers bulletproof protection, has also been seen on several important visits of the Prime Minister. The presence of this vehicle has also been noticed during high-security programs like meetings with foreign heads of state. The armoured Fortuner was also seen during the Prime Minister's meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

The main goal of the Prime Minister's convoy vehicles is not only to travel quickly, but also to ensure safety in various situations such as possible ballistic attacks, explosions, fires and chemical or gas-based threats. That is why these cars are equipped with additional armour, a protected cabin and special security technologies compared to ordinary luxury models.
