Renault Duster Hybrid India Launch on October 17: Check Engine, Mileage and Key Details

September 26, 2026: Renault is set to expand the new Duster lineup in India with a Strong Hybrid powertrain. The company has confirmed that the Renault Duster Hybrid will make its India debut on October 17, adding a third powertrain option to the SUV. The new version will use Renault's E-Tech hybrid technology, which the company says benefits from its Formula 1 experience and technical expertise.

1.8-Litre Petrol Engine With Two Electric Motors

The Renault Duster Hybrid gets a 1,789cc naturally aspirated four-cylinder petrol engine paired with two electric motors. One is a 20hp motor that works as a generator, while the other is a 49hp motor that sends power directly to the wheels.

The complete hybrid system produces 160hp of maximum power and 172Nm of torque. It is supported by a 1.4kWh battery pack. This setup is designed to improve fuel efficiency while offering a different driving experience from the regular petrol versions.

Renault E-Tech Is Different From Toyota's Hybrid System

The Duster Hybrid uses Renault's E-Tech technology, which works differently from the Strong Hybrid systems used in the Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder, Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara and Maruti Suzuki Victoris. Toyota's system uses an e-CVT and Power Split Device, which generally provides smooth and continuous power delivery.

Renault's E-Tech system uses a multi-mode automatic gearbox with fixed gear ratios. It can change gears depending on the driving conditions. As a result, drivers may feel changes in engine RPM and gear engagement when the system switches between electric drive, engine drive or a combination of both.

Larger Battery Than Toyota's System

The Renault Duster Hybrid comes with a 1.4kWh battery, which is larger than the 0.60kWh battery used in Toyota's related Strong Hybrid system. However, a larger battery does not automatically mean better real-world mileage.

Fuel efficiency depends on several factors, including the vehicle's weight, powertrain calibration, traffic, speed, weather and driving style. Therefore, the Duster Hybrid's real-world fuel economy will become clearer only after it is driven in different conditions.

Up to 80% of City Driving in EV Mode?

Renault claims that the Duster Hybrid can complete around 80% of city driving in EV mode. The system uses the electric motor at lower speeds, recovers energy during braking and switches off the petrol engine when it is not required.

These features can help improve fuel efficiency in city traffic. However, the actual amount of EV driving will depend on factors such as traffic, road conditions, speed and driving style.

Will the Hybrid Powertrain Fill the Diesel Gap?

The new Strong Hybrid could play an important role in the Duster lineup because the SUV does not offer a diesel engine. The hybrid powertrain is likely to appeal to buyers looking for better fuel efficiency from a mid-size SUV.

The Renault Duster Hybrid will compete with models such as the Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara Strong Hybrid, Maruti Suzuki Victoris Strong Hybrid and Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder Strong Hybrid in India's mid-size SUV segment.
