Shorter bouts require extra energy and 20% to 60% more oxygen, says study
October 31, 2024 – Italian researchers say that taking shorter walks has more health benefits than going for longer walks. Skip the long walks for shorter ones with rest breaks, they say.
Study author Francesco Luciano from the University of Milan says that he discovered that walking or ascending stairs in 10- to 30-second bursts required 20% to 60% more oxygen, a proxy for energy use, than walking or climbing stairs in a single, continuous session.
"When we walk for shorter bouts, we use more energy and consume more oxygen to cover the same distance. It's like having a car that burns more fuel during the first few kilometres than it does afterwards," Luciano told The Guardian.
