Star architect Nimish Patel passed away in Ahmedabad on Wednesday. He was 70 and passed away after prolonged illness. He is survived by his wife and fellow architect Parul Zaveri.
Some of the noteworthy works of Nimish Patel include The Oberoi Udaivilas, Udaipur, Torrent Research Centre, Gandhinagar and Pharmaceutical Research Institute, Ahmedabad.
Nimish graduated from MIT, Cambridge, with a specialisation in urban settlement design. After returning to India, he set up conservation and planning consultancy firm, Abhikram along with his wife Parul Zaveri in 1979.
Nimish and Parul worked with the ideology of maximizing usage of traditional materials, methods, craftsmen and technology in achieving human comfort levels while minimizing usage of electrical and mechanical energies. As an illustration, their design of Gujarat Vidyapith sabha khand has a unique system for blowing cool air into the room from the cooling wells supplied via tunnels.
