While she promised to break the record and bring the honor home, there was still an air of speculation as to how she’d fight against adverse conditions to achieve the feat; but she did. Bhakti Sharma becomes the youngest in the world and first Asian girl to swim in freezing water of Antartica for 2.25 Km.
After setting this world record on 10th January, Bhakti was declared to have conquered all five oceans of the world, beating the record of British open water swimming champion Lewis Pugh and American swimmer Lynne Cox. She swam for 52 minutes, covering 2.25 Km distance in the freezing waters of Antartica while the temperature was one degree.
Bhakti was accompanied there by her parents and she swam without a wet suit, which adds up to the adversity of already freezing water.
Open water Swimmer, Bhakti Sharma was backed up by Hindustan Zinc in her world record feat and is also signed up for one year of contract where she will train/encourage female swimmers of Udaipur and its adjoining region.
With her heroic achievement, she has made the whole country proud and especially the Udaipurites, who supported her in this feat and blessed her to have won the title.
As informed, Bhakti expressed her gratefulness towards Hindustan Zinc for supporting her when she had lost hope for her mission and needed the support.
Bhakti Sharma has been pursuing open water swimming for the last 10 years and has also swam across 4 oceans, 8 channels and seas, which itself is a world record. These records have been made by her during the year 2004-2010. In the year 2010 President of India awarded her with Tenzing Norgay National Adventure Award. In 2006 Rajasthan government also recognized and commended her efforts.
