June 18, 2025 - India’s leading fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah has revealed that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) had offered him the role of full-time Test captain, but he turned it down.
Bumrah explained the reason behind his decision. He said that owing to his workload, he had told the Board not to consider him for the skipper's role because he would not be able to play all the Test matches.
Additionally, Bumrah also spoke about his relationship with head coach Gautam Gambhir and new captain Shubman Gill.
About Shubman Gill
Bumrah had words of praise for Gill, saying he is always ready to help when needed. In a Sky Sports interview with Dinesh Karthik, Bumrah explained that he believes in giving Gill freedom on the field. He said, “I’ll never jump in unasked, but if I see something important, I’ll quietly share my thoughts. He’s young and thinks for himself, and that’s how it should be. Whenever he needs me, I’ll be there.”
About Gautam Gambhir
Bumrah described head coach Gautam Gambhir as calm and patient - qualities he will need on England’s tough tour. He noted that India is in a transition phase and said Gambhir steps in one-on-one whenever he feels it is right.
“He’s very thoughtful,” said Bumrah. “When the team heads in one direction, he quietly offers new ideas. It’s an interesting time for Indian cricket, and Gambhir is handling it well.”
