Akash Karnataki is a dancer, actor, and choreographer, he runs a successful dance academy known as
Spin Dance Academy. Akash is in Udaipur to head the dance workshop organized by Murdia Group and
Penguin Health Club with association of Spin Dance Academy.

Akash basically hails from Mumbai and has worked in many bollwood flicks as an actor, his top movies are Pyar Mein Kabhi Kabhi (as akash), Taal (as akash karnataki), Hum Pyar Tumhi Se Kar Baithe ( as Akash), Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam ( as Bharat) and Pardes ( as Akash). Besides his generous personality the actor also poses an outstanding talent of western dances and has worked with many notable figures in dance and film industry. I’ve got an opportunity to meet and talk to Akash Karnataki , our long conversation went deep into the dance, choreography, career in dances and Akash’s personal life. Here are the excerpts from an interview with Akash Karnataki.
What are the basic qualities of a dancer? Well, no matter which type of dance one is doing or practicing, the first & foremost thing comes is ZEAL for dance. You gotta have that passion for it. Dance is a beautiful expression of human life, be it any form. Rest all comes up gradually. Dance is all about Body Mechanics, like any other science, and expression of your mind, like any other art subject. So we can call it a blend of both Art & Science.
Would you be able to teach all age groups (especially toddlers & kids) in just 8 days? Why not, I have conducted many workshops not only in India but also in Malaysia. There I taught for just 3 days, but it’s was a grand success. It hardly depends on the number of days. It’s all about how you teach, rather than what you teach. I know how to pick the brains of all age groups, so it comes easy to them.”
What are the career prospects for dance? You can become a choreographer. If you dream of being a leader, you can open your own academy. Dance teachers or choreographers are earning good these days. Dance profession is no longer associated only with girls or a soft or dull profession. It’s gaining ground gradually.”
What is the difference between a Dancer & a Choreographer? A Dancer learns & Choreographer understands. To get into everyone’s head, to slog & start every time with a scratch, with every dancer or beginner is not an easy task for choreographer. A choreographer has more responsibility on his head to lead & teach the crowd, so one has to be a really passionate & fantastic dancer. Like engineering (and other techie professions) needs you to work hammer & tongs, same goes with dance. Hard work is common factor in every profession. Challenges lie everywhere in life.
What do you think about Udaipurietes in terms of dance? Udaipur is a colorful city; its vibrant cultural colors have inspired me to be here. As far as western dance forms are related, I can bet that every single Udaipuriete is very well versed with all these dance forms & terms, but I don’t know why they don’t voice their head about it. They never express or take initiative that they know. So that initiative is required to make the Udaipur shine in world of Western Dance. “
What do you think is lacking in India for the wide expansion of Dance forms (especially western)? Well I think that expansion of literacy & poverty is the crux of the matter. We can’t give our shot to those places where people are deprived of the basic necessities. Literate public can understand all prospects & possibilities of dance, which is also a subject. But Indian takes it just as a hobby. This pigeonhole attitude needs to be removed.
