July 4, 2025 - The most experienced player in the Indian team on the England tour is all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja. He has played more than 80 Test matches in his career so far. However, even after Rohit Sharma's retirement, he was not given the role of captain or vice-captain. Jadeja missed his century on the second day of the Edgbaston Test. He scored 89 runs and shared a 203-run partnership with captain Shubman Gill.
Does Jadeja Want to Become Captain?
After the end of play on Day 2, Jadeja came to the press conference. During this, he said clearly that the time for him to become captain is now over. Jadeja, who made his Test debut in 2012, has around 13 years of experience. This is also his fourth tour of England. In the press conference, Jadeja was asked whether he still wants to become captain. In response, Jadeja smiled and said, "No, that time is over now."
Jadeja on Gill
Jadeja also spoke about Gill’s brilliant innings. He said, "Honestly, he is looking very confident. When he is batting, he doesn’t look like he is under pressure of being the captain. He has taken the added responsibility well."
Jadeja added, "He is managing everything nicely. I didn’t see anything different in his batting. Sadly, today again the ball went straight to the fielder. But while watching him bat, I never felt he would get out. He played really well. When we were batting together, we kept talking and focused on building a strong partnership."
203-Run Partnership with Gill
Jadeja and Gill shared a brilliant 203-run partnership, which helped India reach a strong position. After that, Gill also had a solid 144-run stand with Washington Sundar. England’s Joe Root dismissed Sundar for 42 runs from 103 balls, while Gill’s long innings ended at 269.
India posted a big total of 587 runs in their first innings. In reply, England were at 77 for 3 at stumps on Day 2. Akash Deep and Mohammad Siraj gave early breakthroughs by dismissing Ben Duckett (0), Ollie Pope (0) and Zak Crawley (19). Joe Root and Harry Brook were still at the crease at the end of the day.
Jadeja Talks About Day 3 Plans
Speaking about India's strategy for the third day, Jadeja said, "We are not thinking too far ahead. We want to take 2 or 3 quick wickets before lunch. If we do that, we will be in a strong position."
He also added, "Anything can happen in cricket. We’ve seen big partnerships in the past, so we won’t take the match lightly. Today, we played with good energy, and we hope to get a positive result for India."
