CIMS Hospital, achieved a milestone when Dr. Milan Chag and Dr. Satya Gupta, well-known international cardiologists performed a rare and first of its kind surgery in India for treating a giant cell tumor using Fat Embolization procedure.
The patient in question, a 48 year old male, had come to CIMS complaining of severe pain and a tumor in the left upper thigh. The usual procedure in such cases would have been to remove the tumor surgically but in this case surgery was an extremely dangerous option considering the high risk of bleeding involved.
Therefore Dr. Milan Chag and Dr. Satya Gupta, at CIMS decided to opt for a different approach and performed the complex procedure, which involved using body fat to block the supply of blood to the tumor and curbing its growth which they did successfully.
Fat Embolization technique is an effective method for benign and malignant, hypervascularized bone and soft tissue tumors of the extremities if operated by experienced medical professionals tooled by proper embolizing agents.
Speaking further on the surgery Dr. Satya Gupta said “Indian healthcare industry is going through a resurgence phase backed by improving healthcare factors and economical healthcare procedures and tools. CIMS is the first hospital in India to perform such surgery that involved a high level of risk. The fat embolization of the feeder artery is a very sensitive case to deal with as the procedures involved requires a lot of expertise and accuracy”.
He added, “The Fat Embolization technique was used by us to shrink the size of the tumor and restrict the growth of the carcinogenic cell. The less invasive and less complicated primary treatment of the giant cell tumors ensures hassle free cure for the patient. This is the initial procedure for the long treatment involved in this case. The goal behind introducing this new technique for the first time in India was to secure the patient’s life without the insertion of any foreign body”.
“Embolization of the feeder artery is an effective method to curtail the growth of benign and malignant, hypervascularized bone and soft tissue tumors of the extremities . In fact, after this procedure the tumor also shrinks over a period of time eliminating the need of surgical removal totally in some cases” added eminent international cardiologist, Dr. Milan Chag.
The exceptional surgery provided relief to the patient who was suffering from excruciating pain in his thigh because of a large tumor arising from left in-nominate bone involving roof of Acetabulam and Ileum.
