Mohammed Kaif: Gill Ready for ODI Captaincy

Shubman Gill’s leadership in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy earns high praise after India’s comeback in the final Test

Aug 7, 2025 - Shubman Gill captained the Indian team in the recent Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy in England. The team played well and the series ended 2-2. Before the last Test at the Oval, India was behind in the series 1-2. At the end of the fourth day, India was also behind, and it looked like they would lose.

But on the last day, Mohammad Siraj bowled very well. India won the match by 6 runs and the series ended in a draw. After this series, Gill’s batting and captaincy has come in for praise.

Former India player Mohammad Kaif says that Gill is a strong choice for ODI captaincy and is fully ready. While speaking on his YouTube channel, Kaif said, "I think Shubman Gill will become a better captain in the future. He did a good job in this series. I believe he will get the ODI captaincy too because we don’t know how long Rohit Sharma will continue. Shubman Gill is ready to take over."

Kaif further said, "Gill plays well, especially on wide balls. When Rohit Sharma steps down, he will become captain. He did a great job in the Test match and led the team from the front. When a young team goes to play, two things matter — batting and captaincy. Gill did both very well. It was a good tour for him as a captain and as a batsman."

Kaif praised Gill’s calmness during the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy. He said Gill stayed calm even under pressure in the last Test and trusted his team.

"Gill’s captaincy was praised later. In one Test, he had a small clash with Crawley and lost control. But after that, I saw a big change in him... "I saw the real change when Brooke and Joe Root had a big partnership and were taking the game away. I was watching Gill to see how he would react. He was calm. As a captain, he knew that there is always a chance to come back."

Kaif added, "There was no shouting or anger on his face. He stayed focused. When the team is not doing well and the bowlers are struggling, everyone looks at the captain. Gill stayed calm and did a great job. He planned well and led the team in the right way."
