Dr. Sanjay Gandhi of the Geetanjali Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) performed Rajasthan’s first ever Redo Ascending Aorta Aneurysm operation on 2nd September this year.  Dr. Reenus Demel and Dr. Ravi Patel, Cardiac Surgeons; Dr. Ankur Gandhi, Dr. Manmohan, Dr. Kalpesh, Dr. Dharamchand, Cardiac Anesthetist assisted Dr. Gandhi in performing the operation.

Dr. Gandhi (Cardiac Thoracic & Vascular Surgeon) said that Boondi resident Om Prakash Jain (58) underwent Aortic valve replacement surgery 6 years ago at Fortis Hospital in Jaipur.  During a routine checkup at Kota, his CT Scan and ECHO investigations revealed a dilated Aorta with Aneurysm, which needed immediate surgery.

After a visit to renowned hospitals in Delhi, Jaipur and Ahmedabad, he was told that the operation was risky and could be fatal.

Om Prakash went through the GMCH website and landed at the hospital to take a consultation.  He was admitted and Angiography was performed by Cardiologist Dr. Ramesh Patel in order to view the Coronary Arteries of the patient.

Subsequently, the patient was operated and the ascending Aorta was replaced, along with successful re-implanting of the Coronary Arteries.  The surgery lasted 9 hours.

Explaining the Complexity of the procedure, Dr. Sanjay Gandhi said, “since the patient was operated at the same place the second time following the heart disease, it was a risky procedure.  The Aorta could rupture any moment causing internal bleeding and possibly death of the patient”.  He added that generally the ascending Aorta measures 2.5cm but in this case it was approximately 10cm, which could cause it to rupture anytime.

Explaining Ascending Aorta, Dr. Gandhi also explained that Ascending Aorta is a portion of the Aorta commencing at the upper part of the base of the heart, which supplies oxygenated blood through Arteries in our body.  Aneurysm is baloon shaped dilation formed in Arteries, causing enlargement of Artery, which can rupture and may cause death of the patient.  In this patient the ascending Aorta was measuring 4 times than the normal diameter, which was very dangerous for the patient’s life.
