Hasan Mulla: A Legacy Of Exemplary Philanthropy

UdaipurTimes, Oct 27, 2026 - On October 23, 2026, the Bohra community of Udaipur and thousands others across the world mourned the loss of a remarkable philanthropist who had dedicated his life to social service, compassion and the welfare of others. A gentleman to the core, Hasan Mulla will always be remembered for his exemplary generosity and selfless service to humanity. For having touched countless lives and creating a lasting legacy of kindness that will continue to impact generations to come.

Hasan Mulla grew up in the small town of Bhadsoda in Chittorgarh district and 60 years ago moved to the United States after completing his education. Since then he lived in Los Angeles (LA) with his family though he was a frequent visitor to Udaipur and Bhadsoda… where his heart belonged.

After completing his degree in Civil Engineering from IIT Bombay in 1965, Hasan Mulla pursued his Master’s in Structural Engineering from the University of California, Berkeley. Thereafter, based on his professional expertise, he established a construction company in LA with two of his friends which proved to be the beginning of a successful career in the country.

However, the true measure of Hasan Mulla’s life was not merely his professional success, but a selfless and untiring commitment to society. From a very early age, extending support to the poor and needy, strengthening community institutions became his  life’s mission. He achieved this by creating an effortless environment around him where hesitation to ask for help was never an issue because… he reached out to you!

Hasan Mulla’s bond with his people in Udaipur and Bhadsoda, in particular, remained strong throughout his life. He committed himself to the welfare of his community in both districts through financial assistance, education and charitable causes.

Hasan Mulla had not been born with a silver spoon in his mouth and, therefore, knew the power of education. He strongly believed that the only way forward was through education and, improving access to it was key. He helped scores of young people pursue their educational aspirations in India and abroad, ensuring that financial difficulties did not stand in the way of their dreams.

A firm believer in the transformative power of education, the philanthropist maintained a deep connection with Bohra Youth Public Schools (BYPS) in Udaipur. Working alongside members of the community, he extended substantial support towards administration and effective functioning of the two branches of BYPS. He played a formidable role in the upliftment of both units between 2019 and 2023 through several infra advancements, brainstorm sessions for raising the level of teaching methods and providing financial support to deserving students. His most significant focus was on offering scholarships to financially disadvantaged children aspiring to pursue higher education.

In addition, he supported several other educational institutions in Udaipur and elsewhere ensuring that financial difficulties would not become an obstacle to education. He was, indeed, a visionary philanthropist whose generosity transformed lives and opened doors to education for countless young people.

Hasan Mulla’s second priority, though not any less in importance, was healthcare and he concentrated on improving access to healthcare for members of the community and all those in need of help. He was a key pillar in strengthening the functioning of the Bohra Youth Clinic (Dispensary) and Medical Relief Society in Udaipur and, time and again, helped arrange essential medical machinery and equipment for the facility.

Other Contributions

For many years, the late Hasan Mulla was associated with the Society for Rural Assistance to India (SRAI). Through this organisation, he provided financial assistance for the construction of several irrigation wells in rural India, helping farmers gain access to water and improve their livelihoods. He subsequently also served as the president of the organisation.

Hasan Mulla also played a significant role in the construction of a large mosque in Los Angeles. He helped raise funds for the mosque and, drawing upon his expertise as a structural engineer, personally prepared its complete structural design. This was a special example of his devotion to his faith and community. He put his knowledge and professional experience to use in meeting the needs of the community, helping provide a better place for worship.

The philanthropist’s service to the community demonstrates that he was never content with personal success alone. He gave not merely of his wealth, but also of his time, energy and heart. His true legacy lives on in the lives of those who received support and assistance through his generosity. In particular, his contributions to the community will continue to inspire future generations to open up their hearts for the welfare of the people.

Hasan Mulla is survived by his wife Amina, children Sohail and Anjum and six grandchildren.
