Ujjwal Nikam who argued on behalf of state during 26/11 Mumbai attack was in Lake city on Saturday. He has argued against terrorists Ajmal Kasab, Yaqub Memon and many others. Addressing the advocates on Saturday, Nikam said that if a prosecutor works with full dedication and does a deep study of his subject, then the criminal cannot escape.

On the request of the Bar Association on Saturday morning, he addressed the advocates in the court premises. He said that the master mind of 26/11 of Mumbai, David Hedley is in the US just now and Indian Government has asked for his extradition. A charge sheet has been submitted against Hedley and the government is trying to bring him to India. IPP Nikam was welcomed by High Court Sangharsh Commitee members Shantilal Chaplot, Senior Advocate Rajendra Singh Hiran, Bar Association President Mahendra Nagda and other lawyers of Udaipur High Court bench.

Q/A session between Advocates(Q) and Ujjwal Nikam(A) :

Q : Was it appropriate to open the court during night in Yaqub Memon case?

A : Anything done to maintain public’s good faith in the law is correct.

Q : Were Supreme Court’s guidelines followed during the encounter?

A : Encounter is done keeping in mind Supreme Court’s guidelines.

Q : You are a celebrity and PM’s friend as well?

A : When I once went to take my Padmashree award, actor Priyanka Chopra was sitting next to him. When the PM approached me, I thought he would first address Priyanka, instead he spoke to me first.

Nikam also said that the lawyers need to understand “Apradh-Shastra” deeply. They need not see where the provision lies, but they need to understand why it is there. Lawyers carry a bad image in the society. Public believes that a lawyer first spoils a case and then comes forward to solve it. The lawyers’ image needs to be changed. He also said that the lawyers in Pakistan refused to take Kulbhushan Jadhav’s case. Indian lawyers are willing to fight this case as per rules of International Law Council.
