The current CJI Justice Sanjiv Khanna's term ends on May 13; Justice Bhushan Ramkrishna Gavai is the second Dalit to hold CJI office

April 30, 2025 - Justice Bhushan Ramkrishna Gavai has been appointed as the next Chief Justice of India (CJI). President Droupadi Murmu has approved his appointment as the 52nd CJI of the country. He will take oath on May 14, 2025, following the retirement of the current CJI, Justice Sanjiv Khanna, whose term ends on May 13.

This news was shared on  X (formerly Twitter) by Union Law and Justice Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal who wrote, “In exercise of the powers conferred by the Constitution of India, the President is pleased to appoint Shri Justice Bhushan Ramkrishna Gavai, Judge of the Supreme Court of India as the Chief Justice of India with effect from 14th May, 2025.”

Justice Gavai is the senior-most Supreme Court judge. He will be the second Dalit to hold the office of the CJI, the first one being Justice KG Balakrishnan who was appointed as CJI in 2007.

Justice Gavai will have a six-month tenure and will relinquish office on December 23 on turning 65 years of age.
