Justice Sanjiv Khanna took oath as the 51st Chief Justice of India (CJI) on Monday, November 11, 2024. President Droupadi Murmu administered the oath at a formal ceremony held at Rashtrapati Bhawan, attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, and former CJI Justice DY Chandrachud.
Justice Khanna succeeds Justice DY Chandrachud, who retired from the Supreme Court on Sunday, November 10, 2024. Following the swearing-in, Justice Khanna’s profile was updated as the current CJI on the Supreme Court’s official website, while Justice Chandrachud’s profile moved to the section for former Chief Justices.
CJI Sanjiv Khanna will have a short tenure, set to retire on May 13, 2025, after serving just over six months.
