Justice Surya Kant Recommended as Next CJI
Incumbent CJI BR Gavai, who will retire on November 23, 2025, sends recommendation to the Central Government
Udaipur, Oct 28, 2025 - Chief Justice of India (CJI) BR Gavai yesterday sent a formal recommendation to the Central Government for appointment of Justice Surya Kant as his successor to the office of the Chief Justice of India.
As per procedure, the Law Ministry seeks a recommendation for the successor’s name from the incumbent CJI one month before retirement. CJI Gavai retires on November 23, 2025.
The Centre is expected to issue the official notification within the next few days.
Justice Surya Kant is the senior most judge of the Supreme Court and upon appointment, will take charge as the 53rd CJI following the convention of appointing the senior-most eligible judge. He will assume office on November 24 and will serve until February 9, 2026.
Justice Surya Kant, who will be the first CJI from Haryana, became the Chief Justice of the Punjab and Haryana High Court in June 2017, and was elevated to the Supreme Court in 2019. He is well known for his administrative acumen, practical approach and academic insight.
