Legendary Marathoner Fauja Singh Dies in Road Accident Aged 114
The world’s oldest and well-known marathon runner, 114-year-old Fauja Singh, famous for breaking age-group records, was killed in a hit-and-run accident
July 16, 2025 - The world’s oldest and well-known marathon runner, 114-year-old Fauja Singh, has died in a road accident. According to reports, he was out for a walk near his house when a car hit him and fled the spot. He fell on the road after the accident on the Jalandhar-Pathankot highway. His family rushed him to a private hospital in Jalandhar for treatment, but the doctors declared him dead.
Fauja Singh was a retired marathon runner of Punjabi Indian origin. He broke several world records in different age categories. His personal best time was 6 hours and 2 minutes in the London Marathon (2003). His best marathon time, claimed in the over-90 age group, was 5 hours and 40 minutes at the 2003 Toronto Waterfront Marathon, reportedly at the age of 92. Fauja Singh was also known by names like the Turbaned Tornado, Running Baba and Sikh Superman.

Fauja Singh was born in Jalandhar, Punjab. Before moving to Britain, he worked as a farmer in India. Even after living in the UK for many years, he spoke only Punjabi instead of Hindi or English. He often said he felt sad because he could not speak or write in English.
Could Not Walk Till Age of 5
There is an interesting fact about the world’s oldest marathon runner. Fauja Singh, who became famous for his running, could not even walk properly as a child. He started walking only after the age of five.
Captain Amarinder Singh Expresses Grief
Former Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh expressed deep sorrow over Fauja Singh’s death. In a post on social media, he wrote, “Extremely saddened to hear about the death of great marathon runner Fauja Singh ji in a road accident at the age of 114. His extraordinary life and strong courage will continue to inspire generations. May his soul rest in peace.”
