Obituary: Dr. Mohan Krishna Varma, Renowned Nematologist and Prolific Scholar
Dr. Varma published India's first dictionary on Nematology, a landmark achievement for the scientific community
Udaipur, Nov 26, 2025: Dr. Mohan Krishna Varma passed away on November 19, 2025, in Delhi. Dr. Varma joined the Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI) after completing his MSc in Zoology and began his career in the Division of Nematology in 1966 as a Research Assistant. He served with the Rajasthan College of Agriculture, Maharana Pratap University for Agriculture and Technology (MPUAT) from 1966 till 2002.
His dedication led him to spearhead multiple research projects, including a landmark deputation to Naples, Italy, sponsored by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), where he was honored by the Italian government for his valuable contributions.
Throughout his career, Dr. Varma published numerous esteemed research articles in internationally recognized journals. After years of service in the Department of Nematology, he pursued pioneering studies on crops in semi-arid regions, ultimately earning his doctorate.
As Professor and Head of the Department of Nematology at IARI, Dr. Varma led a team of researchers whose work made significant impacts in the field.
He served as a mentor and research guide to many PhD and MSc students, leaving a legacy of academic excellence and support.A prolific scholar, Dr. Varma published India's first dictionary on Nematology, a landmark achievement for the scientific community.
He was known for his ever-present smile, readiness to help students and colleagues, unwavering integrity, and the depth of expertise he brought to academic forums as an invited speaker.
Dr. Varma led a fulfilling life and is survived by his wife, Smt. Ruby Varma, and two sons, who hold senior positions within the Ministry of Defence and the corporate sector. He was blessed with four grandchildren, one of whom is an engineer at a multinational company, while the others are currently pursuing their undergraduate and graduate studies.The Nematology community has lost a true stalwart in the field.
