NDTV ran a special coverage about an Udaipur family that has kept alive the rare art of treating water as the canvas for their paintings. The art form, called Sanjhi, art has been kept alive by this family.

18 generations of this family of Rajesh Vaishnav have been preserving this art form that is now over 350 years old.

The family paints exquisite artwork on water including likes of Lord Krishna stealing butter from pot, birth of Lord Krisha, killing of Kansa etc.

For the artwork, water is first filled in a vessel and layer of coal is spread over it. This layer of coal works as the canvas. After that stensil is placed carefully on the coal layer and colour powder spread over the stensil. The stensil is then removed leaving behind the coloured art form.

The family indulges in this art form once a year during festivals.

Rajesh Vaishnav suggested that this art form is very difficult to perfect and there are very few people who are coming forward to learn it.
