Samvedna: Home for Abandoned Four Legged Friends
S.R. Praveen and Poonam Sehdeva is one such couple who are taking care of animals through their NGO, Samvedna Animal Trust in Udaipur. They can be arguably compared to Florence Nightingale, who used to cure wounded soldiers injured in Crimean War, as they are serving the forgotten and left out animals without taking any financial help from any individual, government or private organization.
A ‘Pet name’ is a name given out of love for a child. Pets are therefore loved animals, which are loyal to the human being who brings them up, nurtures them, cares for them and longs for their company, when they are not around. A Pet is a term of endearment.
Normally, Pets are considered the best friend of man, and deserve care and attention the same way as other in kin and friends do. Unfortunately, most of the time, similar animals, who are not a part of the Pet faction, i.e. who are left out or are roadside animals, are seen to be ill-treated, something that is a regrettable feature in society.
However, there are people who are concerned for these dumb four legged friends of man.
On being asked why they don’t seek aids from anywhere the couple replied, “We never publicize our NGO as we don’t take funds from people and do not want to have a banner of its name; we never thought to proclaim it as great or something like that, but just want to serve those who can’t help themselves.”
Praveen is from Tamil Nadu and has had a deep concern for animals since the age of 10 yrs. In the year 1991-92 when he came to Udaipur he saw wretched life of pets like dogs, cow, cats, donkeys, etc. but could not do much due to his changing job location.
Poonam Sehdeva, wife of Praveen is working in Punjab National Bank and she also has an equal interest in animals, which took the form of concern, when she came across such creatures.
In year 1999, Praveen’s love towards such animals brought him back to Udaipur where he purchased a house in Sec-9 to take care of disowned and/or wounded animals of nearby areas and cured them with love and proper medication. “Animals are equally important as humans,” said Praveen.
In 2001, Praveen married Poonam and since then this duo is working to improve the life of animals.
There are about 25 dogs in the house; some of them were found in neighbouring plots or roads or localities in badly injured or infected condition.
Both Praveen and Poonam are working and spend maximum part of their salary in the treatment of these animals, still they don’t want any financial help from any individual or government rather they want people to adopt these pets for no cost except providing love and care to them.
“We make sure that those who are adopting our pets really wish to have a pet at home. We also insure that everyone in the family likes to have them,” said Poonam and Praveen.
They have employed a staff of three persons to take care of the pets that they call Kids, as they love them like their own children.
For medical help Praveen consults a Veterinary doctor from Ahmedabad Dr. Tina Giri and a Veterinary hospital in Udaipur.
