Former Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil Passes Away At 90

The senior Congress leader and former Lok Sabha Speaker died after a brief illness on the morning of December 12, 2025

Dec 12, 2025 - Former Union Home Minister and the 10th Speaker of the Lok Sabha, Shivraj Patil passed away at his home town in Latur, Maharashtra, on Friday (December 12) morning at the age of 90. Family sources said the seven-time Member of Parliament had passed away after a brief illness.

A veteran Congress leader, Patil was a highly-respected Parliamentarian and someone known to be dignified in the way he conducted himself throughout his active political life.

Patil served as the Union Home Minister from 2004 to 2008 and as Lok Sabha Speaker from 1991 to 1996. He was Governor of Punjab and also Administrator of the Union Territory of Chandigarh from 2010 to 2015. He played key roles in the Union government and held important portfolios over a career spanning more than five decades.

He is survived by son Shailesh, daughter-in-law Archana (a BJP leader) and two granddaughters.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi condoled the senior leader's demise with a post on X saying, "Saddened by the passing of Shri Shivraj Patil Ji. He was an experienced leader, having served as MLA, MP, Union Minister, Speaker of the Maharashtra Assembly as well as the Lok Sabha during his long years in public life."

"He was passionate about contributing to the welfare of society. I have had many interactions with him over the years, the most recent one being when he came to my residence a few months ago. My thoughts are with his family in this sad hour. Om Shanti," PM added.
