IND vs ENG: Gill Surpasses Virat Kohli’s Record

July 12, 2025 - Shubman Gill is in very good form these days. Since becoming the captain of the Indian Test team, this right-handed batsman from Punjab has scored many runs. After scoring 585 runs in four innings of the first two matches, Gill made history by scoring 16 runs in the first innings of the Lord's Test on Friday July 11.

With this, Gill broke Virat Kohli's record for the most runs by an Indian captain in a Test series in England. In 2018, during India’s tour of England, Kohli played five matches and scored 593 runs. But now Gill has crossed that number by scoring more than 9 runs in the first innings of the third Test at Lord’s. Gill is now the Indian captain with the most runs in a Test series in England.

The record for most runs by an Indian batsman in a Test series in England is held by Dravid. He scored 602 runs in four matches during India’s 2002 tour of England under Sourav Ganguly’s captaincy. Gill has 601 runs right now and needs just 1 run to break Dravid’s record. He still has a chance to do this in the second innings of the current match.
