Reet Sen, a 22 yr old from Udaipur is an enthusiastic mountaineer and shares her story with the readers of Udaipur Times.
Reet did her schooling from St. Xavier School in Udaipur, and after her graduation, is working with her alma mater.
In her interaction with Udaipur Times, Reet recounts her memories from her first climb, that of Mt Yunam and Mt UT Kangri. Mountains fascinated Reet and she was always keen on mountaineering and wanted to live an adventurous life. To give wings to her enthusiasm, she joined the Basic Mountaineering Course (BMC) at the prestigious Atal Bihari Vajpayee Institute of Mountaineering in Manali. She completed the course in July 2023, and two months later, decided to explore Mt Yunam which is a mammoth 6,150 meter structure. She set off on her maiden adventure on 24 September 2023. After a gruelling climb and just 200 meters from the summit, she suffered a bout of AMS (Acute Mountain Sickness), which left her with no option but to descend to a lower altitude. Her other team members completed the summit successfully.
This failure to summit hit her hard and she decided to attempt Mt Yunam once again. Mt Yunam hovering at 20.300ft (6150 meters) is a stunning trekkable point located in the Lahaul district of Himachal Pradesh near the Baralacha La Pass. After descending and after the team dispersed, Reet found another team in Manali, who were attempting a dual trek - Mt UT Kangri and Mt Yunam. Knowing that Mt UT Kangri was way more difficult than Mt Yunam, she still joined the team and after three days of her failed first attempt at Mt Yunam, Reet joined the attempt to Mt UT Kangri. She successfully completed the summit to Mt UT Kangri. UT Ladakh Kangri (6070m (19,914 ft)) is the highest mountain in the Rumste Phu Range of the Zankar Mountains a Trans-Himalayan mountain in the Ladakh. She summitted in 2 days, which was challenging.
The team then reached out for Mt Yunam, but due to heavy snow, the trek to Mt Yunam was cancelled.
However, to execute the dual peak challenge successfully, the team went to Ghepan Glacier, which was a challenge as it was deadly, steep and took 30km of trekking to complete. The team again did this summit as well, in a span of 2 days.
Reet thanks her school St Xavier for sponsoring her maiden trek to Mt UT Kangri and also thanks them and her parents Pankaj Sen and Sheetal Sen for supporting her in her maiden endeavor to Mt Yunam and Mt UT Kangri. Reet Sen is also an alumni of NCC Air Wing - 6 Raj Air SQN Udaipur.
