Udaipur, Feb 13, 2026: The Bangladesh Nationalist Party has secured a thumping victory against its closest contender and self-proclaimed hot favorite Jamaat-e-Islami as the results come to a closure for the Bangladesh national elections - the first since the GenZ uprising in 2024. The chaos of the last 18 months that ensued after the uprising is expected to come to a close and positions are consolidated.

The BNP is placed secured the winning majority with a comfortable lead, winning 213 seats against the 76 captured by Jamaat-e-Islami and its allies, and the rest going to the other parties. The winning breakeven point was 151 seats.

As BNP has already secured the breakeven point, the BNP leader, Tarique Rahman is poised to become the first elected Prime Minister of Bangladesh after the GenZ uprising in 2024 as results consolidated a BNP victory in the Muslim nations 13th national parliamentary election. Tarique is expected to take oath on February 14, 2026, as the BNP makes a return to power after 2 decades.

In addition to electing a new parliament, which many consider vital for the country’s democratic progress following years of political instability, voters also participated in a referendum regarding constitutional changes. For the first time in the nation's history, both votes were conducted at the same time.

Jamaat Falls Short of Expectations

Going by the momentum and noise leading up to the elections in the country, Jamaat was confident of a massive victory and political observers indicated that Jamaat could be heading towards its best performance till date since the country's independence. Hence, after results surprised the Jamaat, the party leaders indicated that they had 'serious questions on the integrity of the results process".

How the Equation Changed

Interestingly, the Jamaat was a key force in the uprising of 2024 that led to the ouster of the then Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina of the Awami League party. The party was banned from contesting the elections and Jamaat-e-Islami saw itself at the forefront of poitical power.

Jamaat-e-Islami had been a key force in the protest movement and initially appeared well-positioned politically. The party made early inroads in constituencies where BNP had yet to mobilize its campaign machinery.

However, the equation changed once the BNP’s campaign gained momentum:

  • Several Awami League leaders joined the BNP, bringing their support bases with them.
  • Young voters who were active in the July 2024 uprising largely backed the BNP.
  • Women voters and minority communities also turned out in significant numbers for the BNP.

These factors combined to deliver a decisive and comfortable victory for the party.

With the results now consolidated, the BNP is expected to form the government, potentially bringing an end to the political turbulence that followed the 2024 uprising.
