French Govt Collapses as PM Bayrou Loses Confidence Vote

Sept 9, 2025 - The French government has collapsed after Prime Minister Francois Bayrou lost a vote of confidence in the National Assembly on September 8 with MPs voting 364-194 (a 170 majority) to oust Bayrou. The vote of confidence had been called for by the PM himself in an attempt to force MPs to adopt his austerity budget.

Bayrou is expected to resign today, September 9, and President Emmanuel Macron has the option to either search for a replacement or call snap elections. As per reports, the Elysee Palace has confirmed that the President will name the new Prime Minister “in the coming days.”

As Assembly president Yaël Braun-Pivet announced the result of the vote of confidence, MPs applauded loudly while Bayrou sat stony-faced. He then walked out of the Parliament and was driven to his residence.

Just before the vote of confidence, Bayrou described the past nine months he spent as Prime Minister as a period of "profound happiness" saying his government had worked with great solidarity and friendship without "a single crisis and a single tension".
