Parliament Standoff: Motion of Thanks Passed Without PM's Reply

Amid protests over former Army Chief’s memoir, the Lok Sabha passed the Motion of Thanks without Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s customary reply, marking the first such instance since 2004

Feb 5, 2026 - The standoff in Parliament over the memoirs of former Chief of Army Staff continued today, Thursday, amid which the Lok Sabha passed the Motion of Thanks on the President’s address without response from Prime Minister Narendra Modi. This was going away from tradition as the Prime Minister’s reply to the Motion of Thanks is customary.

PM Modi was to respond to the Motion on Wednesday (February 4) on President Droupadi Murmu’s address.

This is the first time since 2004 that the Prime Minister has not been able to reply to the Motion of Thanks. In a reversal of roles, it last happened when the Bhartiya Janta Party, then in the Opposition, had not allowed the then Congress Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh, from responding to the motion.

Continued protests by the Opposition MPs forced the Speaker to adjourn the House till 2:00 pm on Thursday as proceedings were repeatedly being disrupted.

The Opposition has been protesting alleging that the Leader of the Opposition (LoP) Rahul Gandhi was not being allowed to quote lines in the Lok Sabha from General MM Narvane’s unpublished memoir on the 2020 Ladakh standoff.
