Why Are Americans Paying for AI in India?’: Trump Aide Peter Navarro Renews Criticism

Udaipur Jan 20, 2026: White House trade adviser Peter Navarro has reignited controversy by questioning why American resources are being used to support artificial intelligence services for users in countries such as India, amid ongoing trade tensions between Washington and New Delhi. Speaking in an interview with former White House chief strategist Steve Bannon on Real America Voice, Navarro argued that AI platforms like OpenAI’s ChatGPT operate on U.S. soil, consume American electricity, and rely on U.S.-based infrastructure while serving large user bases overseas.

Why are Americans paying for AI in India?” Navarro asked. “ChatGPT is operating on U.S. soil, using American electricity, and servicing large users in India, China, and elsewhere around the world.”

Trade Tensions in the Background

Navarro’s remarks come as India and the U.S. remain locked in negotiations over a bilateral trade agreement. Relations have been strained further by President Donald Trump’s decision to impose 50% tariffs on Indian imports, citing India’s continued purchase of Russian oil despite Western sanctions. Navarro has repeatedly accused India of helping finance Russia’s war in Ukraine through its energy imports, a charge New Delhi has consistently rejected. He has also frequently referred to India as the “Maharaja of tariffs,” framing U.S. trade actions as matters of national security rather than economic retaliation.

Broader Concerns Raised

Beyond AI, Navarro also raised concerns about foreign ownership of U.S. farmland, alleging that overseas entities are purchasing agricultural land at prices far above market value. He warned that such practices could contribute to rising food prices in the United States.

Pattern of Controversial Remarks

This is not the first time Navarro’s comments on India have drawn backlash. In the past, he has accused New Delhi of unfair trade practices, labelled India a “laundromat” for Russian oil, described energy imports as “blood money,” and even referred to the Ukraine conflict as “Modi’s war.” One of his most controversial remarks involved a reference to “Brahmins” allegedly profiting at the expense of the Indian public, which prompted a sharp response from India’s Ministry of External Affairs.

MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal dismissed Navarro’s claims, stating, “We have seen some inaccurate statements made by him. We reject them.” India has reiterated that its energy purchases are guided by market realities and national interests.
