Sunetra Pawar Likely To Take Oath as the 1st Woman Dy CM of Maharashtra: NCP Leaders Confirm
Mumbai, January 30, 2026: Senior Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader Chhagan Bhujbal has confirmed that the party will convene a meeting of its legislature on January 31 to appoint Sunetra Pawar as its new leader. Sunetra Pawar is the wife of the late Dy CM and NCP leader Ajit Pawar.
According to media reports, the decision follows consultations within the party after the sudden demise of Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister and NCP leader Ajit Pawar, who was killed in a plane crash near Baramati in Pune district on Wednesday, January 28.
Speaking to the media on Friday evening, Bhujbal said that Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has conveyed to NCP leaders that he has no objection to Sunetra Pawar taking oath as the Deputy Chief Minister of Maharashtra, should the party formally recommend her name.
Ajit Pawar’s tragic death created a political vacuum, leaving both the Deputy Chief Minister’s post and the leadership of the NCP legislature party vacant. Sunetra Pawar, the wife of the late Ajit Pawar, is seen as a consensus candidate within the party during this period of mourning and transition and the meeting on January 31 will be crucial as far as the continuity in governance is concerned.
