Nepal 2026: Voting Underway in Crucial Election

Nepal begins voting to elect 275 members of the House of Representatives; early turnout reported at 6% with key leaders including Balendra Shah and KP Sharma Oli

March 5, 2026 - Voting is currently underway across Nepal for its national Parliamentary elections on Thursday (March 5) to elect 275 members of the House of Representatives. Around 18-19 million people of the country’s 30 million population are eligible to vote across the country.

This election is crucial for Nepal’s political future, as voters’ narrative include governance reforms, economic stability of the country and youth participation in politics. This is Nepal's first election since the 2025 Gen Z-led mass demonstrations against the country's political parties. 

Polling started in the morning at 7:00 am local time and will continue at more than 23,000 voting stations until 5:00 pm (11:30 GMT) local time.By about 9:30 am a voter turnout of 6% was reported.

Under Nepal’s electoral system, 165 members of the legislature will be directly elected through constituency voting, while the remaining 110 seats will be filled through a proportional representation system based on party vote share.

Key Candidates

Balendra Shah - The 35-year-old rapper-turned politician and Kathmandu mayor of the Rastriya Swatantra Party is gaining strong support from young voters.

KP Sharma Oli – Former Prime Minister and veteran Communist Party of Nepal leader is seeking a political comeback.

Gagan Kumar Thapa – Leader in the Nepali Congress party.

The complete results after the vote counting is likely to take 3-4 days.
