Nitish Kumar Files Rajya Sabha Nomination; Signals Exit as Bihar CM

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar files nomination for Rajya Sabha, signalling a shift to national politics after serving as CM for a record 10 terms; intense discussions open up as to who will take over his post in Bihar

March 5, 2026 – Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar today (March 5) filed his nomination for the upcoming Rajya Sabha (Upper House of Parliament) thus ending his tenure as the CM of the State for a record 10 times.

This move marks his shift to national politics and also opens upintense discussion on who will take over his post in Bihar as this could significantly change the political leadership of the State. Speculations are rife that Bihar could see its first CM from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

The Bihar CM was accompanied for the nomination filing at the State Assembly by Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Chaudhary and other National Democratic Alliance (NDA) candidates.

Kumar, a prominent figure in Bihar politics since the mid-1990s, has been one of the most influential leaders in Bihar politics for nearly two decades.

Some supporters of his ruling Janata Dal (United) (JD-U) have protested outside his residence putting pressure on him to stay on as CM instead of moving to the Rajya Sabha.

In a post on X, the Bihar CM thanked his voters for their long-standing support and wrote, “From the very beginning of my parliamentary journey, I have harboured a desire to become a member of both Houses of the Bihar Legislature and both Houses of Parliament. In keeping with that aspiration, I seek to become a member of the Rajya Sabha in the elections taking place this time.”

If elected to the Upper House of Parliament, Kumar will be among those very few people to have been a part of all four Legislative bodies – both Houses of the Bihar Legislature and both Houses of the Parliament.

Polling for 37 Rajya Sabha seats across 10 States will be held on March 16. According to JD (U) sources, Kumar is expected to remain Chief Minister at least until the Rajya Sabha election.
