Regar’s remand extended for 10 days – two arrested in Udaipur for inflammatory posts

Two people were arrested in Udaipur, for allegedly posting inflammatory posts on social media, in relation to the Rajsamand murder.  Meanwhile, police remand of the the accused, Shambhunath Regar has been extended by another 10 days.

Shambhunath was arrested for the brutal murder of a 40 year old laborer from West Bengal in Rajsamand last week, an episode that shocked the nation for the way it was executed, the intent and above all, the sharing of the murder video alongwith a hate speech targeting a particular community.

Raigar is now in custody, which has been extended to purport the actual intent of the murder, albeit even after the accused has confessed that the real motive was love jihad, a term that extremist Hindu groups use accusing Muslim men of entrapping Hindu women.  The team investigating the matter is keeping the proceedings under cover and not disclosing facts.  Rumors have been going around with the intent of diluting the matter.  The police is also refuting the love jihad angle, keeping the investigations continuing.

Earlier, the media had interviewed the IG, the excerpts, taken from Patrika being reproduced as follows:

Q: When and by whom was the video made? A: The accused’s nephew made the video.  A few videos were made on 5th December, while 2 were made on location, during the murder. Q: Is the accused mentally unstable? A: Till now, there has been no evidence of his being mentally disturbed – no records or medical history supports this.  It is, however, too early to come to any conclusion.  The crime that has been committed is heinous and will have far fetched effect.   An extended interrogation and intensive parallel investigation will take place. Q: How many people have been arrested so far, according to the video could there be other people involved as well? A: As far as the investigations have progressed, we have just identified the accused and his minor nephew to be parties to the crime.  However, the motive, murder plan, possibilities of inclusion of other people, etc will be deciphered after our interrogations with the family members, friends and associates of the accused are done with, so that Police is able to dig out the real motive and facts behind the murder. Q: Is the murder a case of mistaken identity – the intent to murder someone else? A: No such facts have come into the picture till now Q: Has anyone from the accused’s family been harassed? A: No such matter has been reported.  No family member has been harassed. Q: The manner in which accused has mentioned love jihad in the video, has he himself been a target of love jihad? A: No Q: Accused was in love with a woman.  Has the girl been staying with someone from the victims family? A: Such an angle does not seem to exist.  No woman has been interrogated till now. Q: In one of the videos, the accused is also talking about keeping a minor girl with him.  Who is this girl?  A: The girl is his daughter, who is mentally challenged.  She is being treated in Udaipur.  The girl is also availing disability pension from government. Q: How many arrests have been made so far? A: Only Shambhunath has been arrested, though over a dozen people have been rounded up for interrogation – all belong to Rajsamand. Q: What does the accused do – his profession? A: He is unemployed for the last one year.  Earlier he used to trade in marble in the Rajsamand, Bhilwara, Gujarat (Anand) and Gurgaon regions.  His parents stay in Gujarat. Q: Is the accused associated with any organisation? A: We have not uncovered any such association in the interrogations till now.

Speaking of events, which really mean discussions, specially on social media – a few WhatsApp groups, to the extent of those where government servants and well known politicians are members are discussing the hate crime and applauding the murder and the accused.  Two people from Udaipur have been arrested by Rajsamand police for promoting enmity between people on the basis of religion using inflammatory Facebook posts.

Regar’s remand extended for 10 days – two arrested in Udaipur for inflammatory posts

The murder incident seems to be taking a politico-religious turn. In Udaipur, local people, who are part of WhatsApp groups have also complained that members are resorting to inflammatory discussions over the murder incident and cuss words in group discussion, which have forced rational people to exit from such groups, which include close friends, business associates and even relatives.  These people claim that members do not seem to be bound by propriety or even dignity for that matter.
