On April 15,2024, the Supreme Court rejected Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal's plea for immediate relief concerning his arrest last month on charges of money laundering related to the alleged liquor policy scam.
Mr. Kejriwal, who was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate on March 21, now faces a waiting period until April 27 for the agency's response to his plea. The court is set to reconvene on April 29 to hear further arguments.
As a result of this decision, Arvind Kejriwal is expected to remain in jail until at least 10 days after the commencement of the Lok Sabha elections. His party, the Aam Aadmi Party, forms a crucial part of the Congress-led INDIA opposition bloc, posing a significant challenge to the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party, especially in Delhi and Punjab, which collectively hold 20 Lok Sabha seats.
