Election Officer issues instructions for media houses on campaigning and exit polls

Period of Silence begins at 6PM on 23 November and applies to media house, be it print, electronic, or digital, including cinema halls.

The office of the Chief Electoral Officer, Jaipur, Rajasthan has issued directives to all media houses and platforms in Rajasthan to abstain from publishing any posts related to election campaigning in Rajasthan, during the Silence Period, i.e. 6pm on 23 November 2023 till 6pm on 25 November 2023, when the voting concludes.

As per the order, during the silence period, any kind of political advertisement and appeal related to election campaign by any candidate or political party on any electronic media, digital media and channels is prohibited.

Similarly, there is a provision regarding Exit Polls under Section 126 A of the Public Representation Act 1951, according to which there will be a ban on all types of print, electronic and other publications on posting any information related to exit polls either directly or indirectly, till 6pm on 30 November. The penalty for such publications is jail upto 2 years or financial penalties.

The order also says that any such publications in print need to be approved by the office of the Chief Electoral Officer, failing which, there will be legal implications.
