Suvendu Adhikari took oath as West Bengal’s first BJP Chief Minister along with key ministers at Kolkata’s Brigade Parade Ground. Check full list.
May 09, 2026: In a historic moment for West Bengal politics, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Suvendu Adhikari on Saturday took oath as the Chief Minister of the state during a grand swearing-in ceremony held at Brigade Parade Ground in Kolkata. With this, the BJP officially formed its first-ever government in West Bengal since Independence, bringing an end to decades of political dominance by regional and Left parties in the state.
West Bengal Governor C. V. Ananda Bose administered the oath of office and secrecy to Adhikari in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, senior BJP leaders, Union ministers, and Chief Ministers from NDA-ruled states.
The high-profile event witnessed massive security deployment across Kolkata, with thousands of BJP supporters gathering at the venue to celebrate what party leaders described as a “historic mandate for change” in Bengal.
Adhikari also created history by becoming the first Chief Minister to take the oath at Brigade Parade Ground. Alongside him, five newly elected MLAs were sworn in as part of the initial Council of Ministers. Sources indicate that the Bengal Cabinet is likely to undergo expansion in the coming days.
Among those who took oath as ministers were Dilip Ghosh, Agnimitra Paul, Nisith Pramanik, Ashok Kirtanya, and Kshudiram Tudu.

BJP Opens New Political Era In Bengal
The ceremony came a day after Amit Shah formally announced Suvendu Adhikari as the BJP Legislature Party leader following the party’s landslide victory in the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections. The decision was finalised during a meeting with newly elected BJP MLAs after the election results were declared on May 4.
The BJP’s victory is widely being viewed as one of the party’s biggest political achievements in eastern India. Over the last decade, the saffron party transformed itself from a marginal political force in Bengal into the state’s ruling party, significantly reshaping the political landscape.
The swearing-in ceremony was attended by several prominent leaders from BJP-ruled states, including Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, Rajasthan Chief Minister Madan Lal Sharma, Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav, and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, among others.

As the BJP officially assumed power in Bengal, political focus also shifted towards former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who remained largely absent from the public spotlight following the election results. There was no official confirmation regarding her whereabouts or whether she would attend the oath-taking ceremony.
The defeat marked a major setback for the All India Trinamool Congress (TMC), which had governed West Bengal for the last 15 years.
With Suvendu Adhikari now taking charge as Chief Minister, the BJP government is expected to face immediate administrative and political challenges, including governance transition, maintaining law and order, and handling the evolving political atmosphere in the state.
